These past few weeks have been filled with amazing projects and lots of learning!
We have studied business and economics with our Economics Fair while students learned about vocabulary, products, profit, advertisements, and so much more!
We wrote a fairy tale story from start to finish and then presented to a Kindergarten and 1st grade class.
In math we have tackled fractions and are beginning to learn about measurement (length, time, weight, and volume). Cooking and baking are great ways to help give real world applications to all of these skills :)
In science we have finished learning about space and planets and have started a new unit about the environment and food chains as students become ecologists. We also have new classroom friends to help us become ecologists. This past week we have said hello to 5 caterpillars that we are watching turn into butterflies! We sadly had 2 tadpoles-Harry and Toothless, that were in our classroom but for a moment, and now have a 3rd tadpole whom we have named Marshmallow. I have taken Marshmallow home with me this week and he is doing well in his new home!
Enjoy a safe and relaxing spring break!

Since the Holiday Break we have been learning a TON! So much in fact that i had a hard time keeping up the website with all of the fun learning going on!
Here's a quick refresh of all that we have been learning about in the New Year.
Math: We learned all about geometry-angles, lines, shapes-2D and 3D, area and perimeter and reviewing multiplication and division. Remember to keep memorizing those multiplication facts!
Reading: We had our big Inventor Museum and everyone did amazing! A big shout out to all of the parents as well who were able to attend and stayed to listen to other students. It meant the world that you took the time to listen to all of their hard work! In the project we worked on: summary, paraphrasing, character traits. Recently we have reviewed story elements through studying different versions of Cinderella. We are looking at Fairytales and what makes them different from other genres.
Writing: In our inventor project-we wrote an expository essay which became their speech and worked through the whole writing process. We have begun a new writing project where students will create their own fairy tale in partners and present it to another class.
Social Studies: We have studied different cities to compare urban, rural, and suburban towns. Some places we learned about were: New Orleans, Mexico City, Cairo, Mountain areas, polar regions, Tokyo. We also reviewed and studied different types of maps and even created out own! The past week we have been learning about Economic terms to help us with our Economics Fair Project. Terms like: goods and services, needs and wants, spending, saving, and many more will help students while creating a business plan for their products or services they will create.
Science: We have studied natural resources, conserving, the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle), and weather. The past week we have been learning about space, our solar system, and the sun.
Social learning:Aside from the academic learning that has taken place we have focused greatly on using kind words and being kind with each other. We have read What Does it Mean to be Kind? We looked at a video that IKEA helped research-bullying plants. One plant was told nice things, the other was told hurtful things. The results? The bullied plant drooped and did not grow as well. We connected these observations back to us and how those hurtful words make us feel. We also conducted the same experiment with an apple. The apple that was talked down to and told hurtful things was bruised and hurt on the inside. We will continue to work on other ways to be better as people in order for our learning to flourish :)

Since Thanksgiving break we have been reviewing fractions, division-and learning how important memorizing those multiplication facts is!
We have created poems to celebrate Guatemala at the Cultural Literacy Night. We read about many famous people in history and used critical thinking to determine which person was most important. We held a debate to persuade the rest of the class into agreeing with their opinion. We learned a new reading strategy (FQR-Facts, Question, Response) to help us dig deeper while reading.
Students have started a new personal narrative and begun our rough draft. Students chose from a brainstorm list of firsts, favorite Holiday memory, favorite gift, and how you got a scar.
In science, we have learned about slow and fast changes to the Earth and learned about different landforms on Earth's surface.

Our week leading up to Groovy-O-Rama held a lot of learning before Thanksgiving break!
In math we continued learning about fractions like 1/2,1/4,1/3,1/6,1/8. Try using fractions during Thanksgiving when passing out portions of pie or cornbread!
In reading we learned about cause and effect and how one cause can lead to multiple effects-so think before you do!
In writing we finished up our expository essay explaining what was our favorite game and why. We wrote introductions, transition wrods, edited our essay and published!
We also learned about procedural texts (recipes, game rules, directions, how to make something) and then created our own procedural text on how to draw a turkey. The results are below! (I purposely drew these turkeys as literal as I could to illustrate how specific you have to be when writing steps.) Maybe you could try following the steps your child created to make a turkey!
In science we continued to work on force, motion and gravity by following some Sheep in a Jeep experiments.
I am so very proud of everyone's performance in our Groovy-O-Rama. I loved seeing the students in a new light and seeing all of their hard work come to life. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving break. I am thankful for all of my students, and all of the parents who go above and beyond!

We have had a great few weeks of learning!
In math we learned multiplication facts, word problems, ratio tables, strip diagrams and started fractions!
In reading we reviewed capitalization, elements of a story, observed nonfiction text and learned about text features. We learned a new strategy to predict nonfiction texts, reviewed fact and opinion, and learned about main idea and inferring.
Our writers created a bio poem about their hero, wrote their first expository essay, and we are learning step by step how to create an expository writing.
In science we have learned about force, motion, gravity, magnetism, and so much more! I wonder what experiment they will remember the most?
We have an exciting week next week
Monday: Veteran's Day Performance 9:00 am.
Tuesday-Thursday will have an altered schedule to accommodate rehearsal times for Groovy-O-Rama.
Friday: Groovy-O-Rama performance 9:50-10:40
Then Thanksgiving break!

It's been a while since updated, but rest assured we have been learning a TON during these weeks.
In math we have worked on arrays and multiplication after reviewing our first 2 units of graphs, rounding, place value, addition and subtraction. We have learned out x0, x1, x2, x4, x8, x10 facts so far!
In reading we have begun our unit of poetry. We have learned about figurative language and used Disney songs for examples. Here's the link in case you want to watch again! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvpLdM-3mTc
We had practice analyzing poets' writing and used it in our own poems.
We have learned all of our lower case letters in cursive and will soon work on the Upper case letters and writing cursive words. Cursive words handwriting practice will be coming home soon.
In science we have learned about all kinds of energy like: thermal, light, sound, and mechanical. We had fun experiments with catapults, beads, and straws just to name a few!
Guatemala is our country of study for our Culture Night coming up in December. We will research Guatemala and create a poem to present. Ask if your student remembers the national instrument of Guatemala (we listened to this music a couple of times).
I have updated the website and included a link to Symbaloo that has all of the websites we use in class as well as websites for kids to use to research. I will update this as we collect more websites to use!

These two weeks have been packed with learning
Our mathematicians worked on rounding, adding, subtracting, estimating, and strip diagrams.
Our Readers learned about summarizing, questioning, synonyms, and responding with R.A.C.E to make sure their answers are complete. (Restate the question, Answer the question, Cite your reasons, Explain your answer). We also got a taste for poetry by introducing figurative language vocabulary words with Disney Songs! Here's the link if you would like to show it again-maybe you can hunt for some figurative language in the next Disney movie you watch (there's almost always personification)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvpLdM-3mTc
We finished our final drafts of our small moment personal narrative stories and began learning cursive this week!
In science we conducted hands on experiments to learn about mixtures (thank you for the donations-the kids loved learning about mixtures with food!)
Homework: reading 100 minutes, handwriting page, math page. The tracing guide and cursive alphabet are yours to keep in case you would like to practice at home!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_kt0ecu_jk
We learned about self talk this week and how to tune out distractions while we are trying to work hard. Maybe they can teach you the game we played to learn this skill!
Our readers learned about P.I.E., unfortunately not the food type, but author's purpose P.I.E.!, inferring, visualizing, and summarizing!
Scientists explored changing states of matter with ice cubes and water.
Homework: reading 100 minutes, handwriting page, science reading with questions, math page (front and back).

We had a great week! In math we worked on frequency tables, dot plots, bar graphs, and the C.U.B.E.S strategy for solving math word problems. Second Step started (a program to help students be better learners, solve problems, and get along with others) and we focused on what that means to be a learner.
Our authors crafted their rough draft story of a small moment. I have enjoyed reading these and getting to know students better in their writing!
In reading we discussed problem/solution, story structure, theme, and point of view. We had a great class discussion while reading Freedom on the Menu which is about the Greensboro sit ins. Many students wanted to know more and were interested to know it was based on true events-events that their grandparents might remember living through! We wrote a poem about a young girl in the story as a class (picture included). We also had a good conversation involving point of view while reading Seven Blind Mice. We also compared The 3 Little Pigs and The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs and we talked about the stories kids might have asked you about earlier this week to show how people remember and view things differently!
Our scientists looked at a reading and reviewed physical properties to prepare for our test.
Homework: Reading 100 minutes, practice spelling words, handwriting page, September 11th reading passage and questions, and math questions.

Our week has been packed with lots of learning!
Mathematicians this week learned about dot plots, pictographs, frequency tables, and 2 digit addition, and clue words to tell the difference between addition and subtraction!
Our readers learned about story sequence, story elements, describing characters, and how characters feelings change through a story.
In writing we learned about big vs. small (rain cloud vs. raindrop) moments and began pre-writing our first personal narrative. We brainstormed emotions to help us with ideas if we are ever stuck and we learned what makes a good hook!
In science we reviewed solids, liquids, and gases, learned from failed experiments, did our first STEAM experiment by building a boat that could hold the most unifix cubes. How many cubes did your child's boat hold?
Homework:
This week students are responsible for 100 minutes of reading, practicing new spelling words, handwriting practice, a science reading and questions, and math questions.
Grandparent's lunch is next Friday (9/7). Our lunch time is 11:56-12:26 If you are attending please meet us in the cafeteria and say goodbyes at the end of our lunch time so our authors can get back to the classroom for our writing time.

This week was very eventful and productive! Students got familiar with our routines and were flexible as new things came up-like our fire drill, lock down drill, and library visit.
In math we tackled bar graphs, addition strategies, and place value. Groups were challenged to create different structures with base ten pieces to review place value and I loved seeing their creativity and collaboration come through!
In Reading we learned about finding a just right book, set goals for ourselves, practiced making connections to self and texts, and reviewed problem and solutions.
In writing we learned a spelling activity, and reviewed verbs, adjectives, and what makes a complete subject. We even learned some new words like predicate!
In science we explore physical properties of objects such as magnetism, sink or float, temperature, texture and mass.
Students have earned 173 stick points already to work towards our 300 points goal! I am proud of how hard they are working in class and more importantly how they treat each other!
Homework Due Friday: Same spelling words-Spelling Test will be Friday 8/31
Reading 100 minutes and logging the time (if the sheet gets lost, you can write down the minutes in their agendas)
10 Questions of review math are stapled to the reading log

We had an amazing 2 days of school this week! I am absolutely sure that they only gave me THE best students because everyone has been so great. We introduced our new school wide agreements: Be safe, Be respectful, Be responsible and talked about what that looks like. We also introduced a stick system the whole school will be using this year (new to everyone). If we reach 300 points/sticks the class receives a prize and the school is also working for a prize for every class. Your students can tell you more about it and I will tell you more at Open House.
We had a great talk about kindness while reading Chrysanthemum. Each time someone said something mean we ripped a piece of our heart. By the end of the book we only had pieces and I asked students to put the pieces back to the heart. The picture shows what we did. We talked about how mean things rip our hearts and even though nice people can help put our hearts back it isn't always the same-so be careful what you say and always choose kindness! Ask your child if they could put their heart back together!
Open House in my classroom is August 21 at 5-5:30 giving you information about portable life, what we will learn, and other important information. Mrs. Sharp will hold an Open House 5:30-6:30 in the cafeteria with more information that applies to everyone in school.
Homework was passed out today. It is one sheet with Reading log and spelling words. This page is due next Friday 8/24. Students need to practice spelling words and read 100 minutes by Friday. We will have our first spelling test 8/31 over these words you see on this week's spelling list.
Please email me if you have any other questions!

About Me
I was born and raised in Round Rock. All of the teachers I had, helped inspire me to become an educator. I graduated from the University of Texas and for the past four years I have been teaching in Leander ISD as a 4th grade teacher. This is my first year teaching in Round Rock and my first year teaching 3rd grade. I am excited to start this new adventure as a Forest Creek Coyote!
I am a Harry Potter fan, which inspired the theme of my classroom. This year we will be keepers of knowledge, and we will look after each other, and we will keep learning while having fun! I have a 1-year-old son who keeps me on my toes ever since he learned to walk, and a rescue dog named Daisy who is a bundle of energy. In my extra time, I like to do crafts, decorate cakes, watch football, and go swimming.
I’m looking forward to a great year with you!
